Altcoin

Also known as: Alternative Coin, Alt

Any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, ranging from major platforms like Ethereum to thousands of smaller tokens with various use cases.

Altcoin, short for "alternative coin," refers to any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. The term emerged early in crypto history when new projects positioned themselves as alternatives to Bitcoin, each attempting to improve on different aspects like transaction speed, programmability, or privacy.

Categories of Altcoins:

Layer 1 Blockchains: Independent networks with their own consensus - Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), Avalanche (AVAX)

DeFi Tokens: Governance and utility tokens for financial protocols - Uniswap (UNI), Aave (AAVE), Maker (MKR)

Stablecoins: Price-pegged tokens (usually to USD) - USDT, USDC, DAI

Meme Coins: Community-driven tokens with cultural value - Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Pepe (PEPE)

Utility Tokens: Access to specific platform services - Chainlink (LINK), Filecoin (FIL), The Graph (GRT)

Altcoin Season:

"Altseason" refers to periods when altcoins outperform Bitcoin. This typically occurs during the later phases of a bull market cycle, when profits from Bitcoin rotate into smaller-cap assets. The Bitcoin Dominance metric (BTC's share of total crypto market cap) drops during altseasons.

Risk Profile:

CategoryVolatilityTypical Drawdown
Large-cap altsHigh60-85%
Mid-cap altsVery high80-95%
Small-cap altsExtreme90-99%
Meme coinsExtreme95-100%

Investment Considerations: While altcoins offer higher potential returns than Bitcoin, they carry significantly more risk. Many altcoins from previous cycles (2017, 2021) never recovered their highs. Focusing on projects with proven product-market fit, active development, and sustainable tokenomics reduces risk.
