Restaking

Restaking enables staked assets (primarily ETH) to secure multiple protocols simultaneously. Instead of ETH staking only securing the Ethereum network, restaked ETH also provides economic security to oracles, bridges, data availability layers, and other services, earning additional rewards for the staker.

How Restaking Works:

1. A user stakes ETH (or holds liquid staking tokens like stETH)
2. They opt into restaking by delegating to an operator on EigenLayer or similar protocol
3. The restaked collateral now secures additional services (called AVSs)
4. The staker earns base ETH staking rewards plus AVS rewards
5. If the operator misbehaves, the restaked ETH can be slashed by any of the secured services

Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs): Similar to how stETH represents staked ETH, LRTs represent restaked positions: - eETH (ether.fi): Largest liquid restaking token - pufETH (Puffer): Permissionless restaking - rsETH (KelpDAO): Multi-AVS restaking

Benefits: - Higher yields through stacked rewards - More capital-efficient use of staked ETH - Bootstraps security for new protocols without each needing their own validator set

Risks: - Cascading Slashing: Misbehavior in one AVS slashes collateral used by all - Systemic Risk: Over-leveraged restaking could destabilize Ethereum security - Complexity: Multiple layers of smart contract risk - Concentration: A few large operators control most restaked capital

Vitalik Buterin has warned about "overloading Ethereum consensus" through restaking, urging the community to carefully consider systemic risks.
