The stablecoin giant quietly became one of the world's largest Bitcoin holders.

What Happened

Tether, the company behind the world's largest stablecoin USDT, has added 8,888.88 BTC to its treasury wallet as part of its Q4 2025 profit allocation. CEO Paolo Ardoino announced the acquisition via social media, confirming the purchase was worth approximately $780 million at current prices.

The move brings Tether's total Bitcoin holdings above 96,000 BTC, valued at roughly $8.4 billion. This positions the company as the fifth-largest Bitcoin wallet globally, according to on-chain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence.

Why It Matters

Tether's systematic accumulation represents a different approach than corporate buyers like MicroStrategy. Rather than raising capital specifically for Bitcoin purchases, Tether allocates up to 15% of its quarterly operating profits to BTC, a policy introduced in 2023.

With an estimated average acquisition cost of $51,100 per BTC, Tether sits on more than $3.5 billion in unrealized profits. This strategy allows the company to diversify its reserves without touching the assets backing USDT, while still maintaining highly liquid instruments for its stablecoin liabilities.

What to Watch

As institutional adoption of Bitcoin continues to grow in 2026, Tether's steady accumulation adds another major player to the list of significant BTC holders. The company's approach of using operating profits rather than debt or equity raises could serve as a model for other firms looking to build Bitcoin exposure without taking on additional risk.

Key Takeaways

This is a developing story. Tether's Bitcoin strategy continues to evolve alongside its dominant position in the stablecoin market.
