Key Aave contributor BGD Labs will end all technical work on April 1, citing centralization concerns and friction with Aave Labs over v4 development.

BGD Labs, one of Aave's most important technical contributors since the protocol's early days, has announced it will not renew its engagement with the Aave DAO after April 1, 2026.
BGD Labs published a governance forum post on February 20 confirming its departure from the Aave ecosystem after four years of continuous contributions. The firm built critical infrastructure including Aave v3, the Umbrella risk framework, chain expansion tooling, and security coordination systems.
The current Phase 6 agreement, approved by Aave governance in October 2025, runs through April 1, 2026. BGD Labs stated it will fulfill all remaining obligations, including asset onboarding and security work, until the contract expires. The team also proposed a two-month optional security retainer from April through June to handle any emergency incidents affecting Aave v3 and governance systems.
AAVE's token price dropped approximately 6% following the announcement, reflecting market concern about the protocol's development continuity.
BGD Labs cited three core reasons for its exit: governance misalignment, growing centralization within the Aave DAO, and tensions with Aave Labs over the prioritization of v4 development at the expense of maintaining existing products.
The departure raises questions about Aave's technical resilience. BGD Labs was responsible for critical security coordination and infrastructure that supports over $26 billion in total value locked across multiple chains. Replacing that institutional knowledge and security expertise will take time, and any gap in coverage could introduce risk for depositors.
This also signals a broader tension in DeFi governance. As protocols mature, friction between core development teams and DAOs over direction, compensation, and autonomy has become more common. Similar disputes have affected protocols like MakerDAO and Lido in recent years.
The Aave DAO will need to onboard new technical contributors or expand Aave Labs' role before the April 1 deadline. Any delays in the transition could affect chain expansions, asset listings, and security response times. The proposed two-month security retainer gives some buffer, but governance will need to vote on it. AAVE token holders should monitor governance proposals for transition plans in the coming weeks.
BGD Labs' exit marks a significant governance moment for one of DeFi's largest protocols. The transition period through April gives the DAO time to adapt, but the loss of a four-year contributor with deep protocol knowledge introduces uncertainty that markets have already begun to price in.

A CAPO oracle misconfiguration on Aave caused 34 users to lose positions worth $27M, with full reimbursement pledged by the DAO.

The DeFi lending protocol faces internal conflict over brand control and fee allocation, triggering a whale sell-off while founder Stani Kulechov buys the dip.
