The TON blockchain activated Catchain 2.0 on April 9, slashing block production times from 2.5 seconds to 400 milliseconds and delivering sub-second transaction finality.

TON's biggest consensus upgrade in years went live on April 9, reducing block times by 6x and enabling near-instant transaction confirmations across the network.
The TON blockchain activated Catchain 2.0 on its mainnet on April 9, 2026, replacing the original consensus mechanism with a faster validator communication protocol. Block production times dropped from 2.5 seconds to roughly 400 milliseconds, and transaction confirmations now settle in approximately one second.
The upgrade introduces the QUIC transport protocol for validator-to-validator communication, reducing delays between block proposals and confirmations. Validator staking rewards are also set to increase due to the higher block production frequency, which raises the expected annual inflation rate across the network.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced the upgrade, describing it as the first of seven steps in a plan called MTONGA. The next planned step targets a 6x reduction in TON transaction fees.
Sub-second finality puts TON in the same performance tier as Solana and Sui, two networks that have attracted developers specifically for their transaction speed. For TON, which is tightly integrated with Telegram and its more than 1 billion monthly active users, faster confirmations could make in-app crypto payments feel as instant as sending a message.
The MTONGA roadmap signals that this is not a one-off improvement. With fee reductions planned as the next step, TON is building a case as a high-throughput, low-cost chain targeting consumer-facing applications at scale.
The remaining six steps of the MTONGA plan have not been fully detailed. Durov indicated the next phase will focus on cutting transaction fees by 6x. Developers and validators will be monitoring network stability in the days following activation, particularly around validator synchronization under the new consensus timing.
This is a developing story. The Catchain 2.0 activation represents a major technical milestone for the TON ecosystem, though the full impact on adoption and network activity will take time to materialize.
