Zama provides a live confidentiality layer for public blockchains using Fully Homomorphic Encryption, which allows computation on encrypted values. Its May 2026 protocol update introduced a beta TypeScript and React SDK, delegated decryption, and official ERC-7984 wrappers for seven assets including USDC, USDT, WETH, and ZAMA. On July 23, Zama opened a confidential request-for-quote venue in private beta on Ethereum, with a public launch planned for September 2026. Four days later, the team reported 1,040 confidential ERC-7984 transfers per second on an eight-H100 GPU node, a compute benchmark rather than end-to-end chain settlement. ZAMA pays for protocol encryption and decryption, rewards operators and stakers, and burns protocol fees.
Investment Thesis
The case for ZAMA now depends on converting a live technical stack into fee-generating confidential finance. The SDK and ERC-7984 wrappers reduce integration work, delegated decryption provides a rules-based path for regulated access, and the private-beta RFQ gives the protocol a first-party application with direct token value capture. Zama states that 100% of RFQ swap fees will fund ZAMA purchases and burns, while its May update reported more than half of circulating supply staked. The July GPU benchmark materially improves the compute case, but it does not prove end-to-end settlement capacity, application demand, or institutional liquidity. Supply remains the largest token constraint: only about 20% of the 11 billion tokens circulates. The September RFQ launch, subsequent multi-chain expansion, and measurable fee volume are therefore better conviction tests than another laboratory throughput record.
Competitive Position
Zama competes as an FHE infrastructure provider with its own confidential-finance applications. The SDK, delegated decryption, ERC-7984 wrappers, and private-beta RFQ create a broader stack than a cryptography library alone. Its differentiation is encrypted computation with public verification, while zero-knowledge and MPC systems remain more mature for some privacy workloads. The RFQ public launch will test whether that technical distinction produces liquidity and fees.
Conclusion
Zama’s July releases move the thesis from research infrastructure toward a measurable product test. The September 2026 RFQ launch now matters more than another benchmark: recurring confidential swap volume and ZAMA burns would validate the fee model. Until that evidence arrives, the compute-versus-settlement gap and 80% non-circulating supply support the existing HOLD posture.
