Halving

También conocido como: Bitcoin Halving, Block Reward Halving, Halvening

A programmed event that cuts the Bitcoin mining reward in half approximately every four years, reducing the rate of new BTC creation and increasing scarcity.

A halving is a built-in Bitcoin protocol event that reduces the block reward for miners by 50%. This occurs every 210,000 blocks (roughly every four years) and is a core mechanism of Bitcoin's deflationary monetary policy, ensuring that the total supply never exceeds 21 million BTC.

Bitcoin Halving History:

2ndJul 201612.5 BTC$650$2,500+
3rdMay 20206.25 BTC$8,700$55,000+
4thApr 20243.125 BTC$64,000$100,000+

Why Halving Matters:

  • Supply Shock: Miners earn fewer BTC per block, reducing new supply entering the market
  • Scarcity Narrative: Reinforces Bitcoin's "digital gold" value proposition
  • Miner Economics: Less profitable miners shut down, securing mining remains with efficient operators
  • Historical Correlation: Price has historically increased significantly 12-18 months after each halving

Halving Economics:

Before the 4th halving, miners produced ~900 BTC per day. After, this dropped to ~450 BTC per day. At $60,000 per BTC, that is a reduction of $27M in daily new supply entering the market.

Future Halvings: - 5th halving: ~2028 (1.5625 BTC reward) - Final satoshi mined: ~2140 - After all BTC is mined, miners earn only transaction fees

Impact on Mining Industry: Each halving forces miners to become more efficient. Miners with higher electricity costs or older hardware become unprofitable. This drives innovation in mining hardware, renewable energy adoption, and geographic distribution to find cheap power.

Criticisms: Some argue the halving's price impact is priced in ahead of time since it is a known, scheduled event. Others point to the consistent post-halving rallies as evidence that markets do not fully anticipate the supply reduction.
