On-Chain
Également connu sous: On-Chain Data, On-Chain Analytics, On-Chain Metrics
Refers to transactions, data, and activities recorded directly on a blockchain, publicly verifiable and permanently stored in the distributed ledger.
On-chain describes any activity or data that is recorded on a blockchain. Every transfer, smart contract interaction, and state change that occurs on-chain is transparent, immutable, and verifiable by anyone. On-chain analysis has become a major discipline for understanding crypto market behavior.
On-Chain vs. Off-Chain:
| Aspect | On-Chain | Off-Chain |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Blockchain ledger | Centralized databases |
| Visibility | Public, transparent | Private (usually) |
| Immutability | Permanent | Editable |
| Cost | Gas fees per transaction | Free or cheaper |
| Speed | Block time dependent | Instant |
| Examples | Token transfers, swaps | CEX order books, private messages |
On-Chain Analysis Metrics:
| Metric | What It Measures | Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Active Addresses | Daily unique transacting addresses | Network usage |
| Transaction Volume | Total value transferred | Economic activity |
| Exchange Flows | Tokens moving to/from exchanges | Buy/sell pressure |
| Whale Movements | Large holder activity | Potential market moves |
| NVT Ratio | Market cap / transaction volume | Valuation (like P/E) |
| MVRV Ratio | Market value / realized value | Over/undervaluation |
| Supply in Profit | % of supply above purchase price | Market sentiment |

Why On-Chain Data Is Powerful: Unlike traditional markets where insider trading and private deals are hidden, blockchain transactions are fully transparent. Analysts can see exactly when large holders accumulate, when funds move to exchanges for potential selling, and how DeFi protocols are being used, all in real-time.
Limitations: On-chain data shows what happened but not why. Large exchange transfers might be internal reshuffling rather than sell orders. Wallet attribution is imperfect, as one entity may control many addresses. Context and multiple data points are needed for accurate interpretation.
