Staking Rewards

Également connu sous: Staking Yield, Staking APY, Validator Rewards

The cryptocurrency earnings received by token holders who participate in network validation by locking up their tokens in a Proof of Stake blockchain.

Staking rewards are the tokens earned by participants who lock up (stake) their cryptocurrency to help secure a Proof of Stake blockchain. Rewards come from a combination of newly minted tokens (inflation) and transaction fees paid by network users.

How Staking Rewards Are Calculated:

Rewards depend on several factors: - Total Staked: More total tokens staked means each staker gets a smaller share - Inflation Rate: How many new tokens the protocol creates per year - Transaction Fees: Fees burned or distributed to stakers - Validator Performance: Uptime and correct attestation rate

Current Staking Yields:

NetworkNominal APYReal Yield (minus inflation)
Ethereum3.5-4.5%~1-2%
Solana6-8%~1-3%
Cosmos15-20%~5-10%
Cardano4-5%~1-2%
Polkadot12-15%~2-5%

Nominal vs. Real Yield: If a network pays 10% staking rewards but inflates the token supply by 8%, the real yield is only 2%. High nominal APY often masks high inflation that dilutes non-stakers.

Where Rewards Come From: 1. Protocol Inflation: New tokens minted by the protocol (most common) 2. Transaction Fees: Fees paid by users of the network 3. MEV Tips: Priority fees from searchers (Ethereum-specific) 4. Slashing Penalties: Tokens confiscated from misbehaving validators (minor source)

Reward Frequency: - Ethereum: Every epoch (~6.4 minutes) - Solana: Every epoch (~2-3 days) - Cosmos: Every block (~6 seconds) - Cardano: Every epoch (~5 days)

Compounding: Staking rewards that are restaked compound over time. A 5% APY compounded over 10 years yields 63% total return, compared to 50% with simple interest. Many staking services offer auto-compounding.

Tax Considerations: In many jurisdictions, staking rewards are considered taxable income at the time they are received, based on the fair market value at that moment. Keeping records of reward receipt dates and values is important for tax compliance.
