MEV

MEV (Maximal Extractable Value, formerly Miner Extractable Value) is the profit that validators or block builders can capture by manipulating the order of transactions in a block. MEV is an inherent property of blockchains where transaction ordering affects financial outcomes.

Common MEV Strategies:

Front-Running: - A bot sees a large buy order in the mempool - It places its own buy order before the user's transaction - The user's large buy pushes the price up - The bot sells at the higher price for profit - The user gets a worse execution price

Sandwich Attacks: - The bot places a buy before AND a sell after a target transaction - The victim's trade is "sandwiched" between the bot's trades - The bot profits from the price impact it created - Users lose value without realizing it

Arbitrage: - Prices differ between DEXs after a large trade - MEV bots instantly arbitrage the difference - This actually helps market efficiency (unlike front-running)

Liquidations: - Monitoring DeFi positions approaching liquidation thresholds - Racing to execute liquidations for the reward
