Trading volume represents the total amount of a cryptocurrency that has been traded over a specific time period, most commonly 24 hours. It's a key indicator of market activity, liquidity, and investor interest.

Formula: 24h Volume = Sum of all trades in 24 hours (in USD or native token)

Types of Volume:

Spot Volume: - Actual buying and selling of assets - Real exchange of cryptocurrency - Most relevant for price discovery

Derivatives Volume: - Futures, options, perpetuals - Often many times larger than spot - Can influence spot prices

On-Chain Volume: - Transfers on the blockchain - Includes non-exchange transactions - Doesn't always mean trading

What Volume Indicates:

High VolumeLow Volume
Strong interestWeak interest
Better liquidityPoor liquidity

Volume Analysis:

Volume + Price Up: Strong bullish confirmation Volume + Price Down: Strong bearish confirmation Low Volume + Price Move: Weak, potentially reversible

Volume/Market Cap Ratio: - Healthy: 5-20% daily volume to market cap - Very liquid: Greater than 20% - Illiquid: Less than 1%

Volume Manipulation: Beware of artificial volume: - Wash Trading: Self-trading to inflate volume - Incentivized Trading: Rebates for volume - Bot Activity: Automated trading loops

Reliable Volume Sources: - CoinGecko (uses trust scoring) - CoinMarketCap (adjusted volume) - On-chain analytics

Pro Tip: Compare volume across multiple sources. Large discrepancies may indicate manipulation.
